Would you like to be notified by email when Magenta Spreen becomes available?

Description

MAY BE AVAILABLE 3/1/2017. This species of lambsquarters has a beautiful magenta tinge to it and a nice spinach-like flavor. Harvest as baby greens after a month at 6-8", or harvest mature plants for cooking after 2 months. Seeds are edible too. Good pioneer species for an edible forest garden – eat your weeds! Will reseed freely in the garden (if you like a perfectly weed free garden, this is probably not the plant for you). And this one is nice because the magenta color makes it easy to find amongst the sea of green. Seeds grown by Nature & Nurture Seeds.

Growing

Growing Instructions (for USDA Zone 5b):

Direct sow anytime 3/15-9/15. 20 seeds per foot, ½” deep. Seeds can be broadcast and left on the soil surface as long as they are kept continuously moist. Tolerates both hot and cold weather with best results from early spring plantings. Lambsquarters will re-seed prolifically if left in place.

Harvest:

Harvest stems and leaves of young plants and leaves of larger plants.

Seed Saving Instructions (for gardeners):

Wait until leaves are brown and seeds turn black. Harvest seeds when plants are fully dry. Seeds are easily removed by hand into a bucket or by cutting plants onto a tarp and stepping on plants. Lambsquarters will re-seed prolifically if left in place.
