Black Turtle Bean Plant Seeds produce hardy, high-yielding plants with small, glossy black beans packed with protein and fiber. Ideal for soups, chili, and Latin dishes, these beans thrive in warm climates with full sun. Drought-tolerant and nitrogen-fixing, they enrich soil while providing a reliable harvest. Perfect for home gardens and sustainable farming.

Easy to grow dry, black bean perfect for burritos, tacos, enchiladas, soup and more! Tasty and high-yielding, Black Turtle Beans are superfoods packed with protein and anthocyanins. Their dense and meaty texture makes them hearty and perfect for vegetarian meals. Plants are "bush" type, with sturdy stems. Beans were domesticated by indigenous peoples of central America. This is the 'Midnight' strain bred by Cornell University in the 1980's to be disease resistant to Bean Common Mosaic Virus, Fusarium, Pythium, and white mold.

100 days to maturity.

Sow bean seeds outside 5/15-6/15 (after soil temp has reached at least 60 °). Sow seeds 1” deep, 4” apart in rows 18” apart. Protect seedlings from slugs/snails (use caffeinated coffee grounds or organic phosphate based slug bait). Days to germination: 6-16. Beans perform best if the seeds are inoculated with Bean Inoculant at planting time. Protect plants from groundhogs & deer. In humid climates, dry-bean plants benefit from wide spacing for good air circulation so that pods can dry down in late summer.
