Garlic Bulbs ("Seed Garlic")
In our farm kitchen, garlic finds its way into almost everything! Its taste and health-enhancing properties make it a staple for us year round. Homegrown garlic far exceeds store-bought in interesting, complex flavor and clove size.
Garlic is easy to grow - it is deer and woodchuck proof! Plant it in late fall, weed & water spring and early summer and harvest in July. Cured it can last 4-12 months depending on the type and storage conditions. See our Garlic Growing Guide.
Types of Garlic:
Hardneck: Have a woody inner stem which distinquishes them from softneck types. In general, hardnecks have better flavor and larger cloves than softneck types however they tend to not store as long. Hardneck types make garlic scapes which is a whole nother culinary delight in itself! Our favorite is to make Garlic Escape Pesto with garlic scapes! We choose our hardnecks for flavor and/or large clove size.
Softneck: Softneck types have a soft, pliable stem that can be braided. In general, softneck types store much better than hardneck types so you can harvest in July and still be enjoying them in spring. They have more cloves that tend to be smaller than hardneck types. We choose our softneck types for good flavor and larger clove size.
Bulb Size:
Large: Larger bulbs have larger cloves which, when planted, will grow into larger plants which will produce larger bulbs/cloves for harvest. Most folks like bigger cloves in the kitchen. The best quality seed garlic has large cloves and makes the best seed garlic for planting.
Culinary/Small Bulbs: Our "culinary" (small bulb) size can be planted - they will just produce smaller bulbs and cloves.
Our garlic bulbs for planting (aka "Seed Garlic") are made available early August. Garlic is ONLY AVAILABLE LATE SUMMER & FALL while stock lasts. We can only ship to certain states - check the variety descriptions for more details.
