We are crazy about radicchio and we think that you will be too! We fell in love with it when traveling in Italy where every salad contained the deep burgundy color and mild bitterness of radicchio adding diversity of flavor and color to otherwise plain lettuce salads. Erica also loves it browned in the oven drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Plants are cold hardy and can be grown early spring and late into the fall.

Radicchio has a texture similar to lettuce with a pleasantly bitter flavor. This early Treviso-type heirloom raddicio boasts large (7-9"), oval heads that are relatively uniform and tightly formed - exceptional for an heirloom type.  These are as the round radicchio that you find in the grocery store only the heads are oval rather than round. You will find that a few plants do not make heads, especially when grown in less than ideal weather. Raddicchio prefers cool weather for good growth and head formation so plan to grow it in early spring and fall. Heads can store in the fridge for 1-2 months. 60-70 days to maturity.

Radicchio is a cool weather loving plant – so grow it into the fall. Start seeds in containers 5/21-6/21. Sow seeds 1/16" deep. Days to germination: 7-10. Transplant outside 6/21-7/21. Plant spacing: 12". Radicchio are cold hardy to about 20°.
