Sow fennel seeds directly outdoors anytime May 25th – July 15th. Plant seeds ¼” deep, 4 seeds together in a group, 18” apart. Thin to strongest 1 plant. Alternatively, start seeds indoors in biodegradable pots April 20th and plant outdoors (pot and all) May 20th, spaced 18” apart. Keep seeds moist until germination. Days to germination: 5 - 15. Fennel plants need well drained soil so if you have clay soil, plant them in a raised bed. Bronze fennel will grow in part-shade.
Clip leaves as needed once plants are established (at least 12” tall).
Collect ripe seeds in early fall after they turn from green to brown.
